This meter is one of (if not the) most popular meters out there.  It is a useful and inexpensive tool for measuring the strength of AC (alternating current) magnetic fields.  These fields are measured in milligauss (mG).  This type of meter is also called a gaussmeter.

The Trifield Meter gets its name because it also measures electric fields and radio (RF)/Microwave signals.  However, we only recommend using the Trifield Meter on its magnetic settings.  The electric and RF settings are not sensitive enough to be useful for measuring for health reasons (such as cell phone transmissions, cordless/WiFi, electric fields from live wiring in walls and cords, etc).  So stick with the magnetic settings - this meter is one of the easiest and most enjoyable meters to use out there.

As stated above, this meter does NOT measure dirty electricity.  If you use this meter with our filters, you will not see a reduction in the reading.  Dirty electricity (an electric field requiring very special tuning to measure) and magnetic readings (gauss) are totally different things, and can be completely unrelated when it comes to using the Trifield meter.  So please do not purchase this meter in hopes of measuring dirty electricity or for use with our filters.

This meter can help you discover useful things such as hidden transformers in walls (doorbell transformers, etc), ground current on your plumbing (this is a big concern), and identify other appliances/devices that throw large magnetic fields that may adversely affect human and animal health.  We personally use this meter for its magnetic field detection, and it has identified these things mentioned above.  You may find slightly cheaper units on the market, but this one is much easier to use and read, and the 3-axis magnetic design makes it worth every penny.

We usually use the 0-100 setting when we are walking around a house looking for magnetic fields.  This setting is the most useful.  The 0-3 setting is for finer measurements and frankly isn't used very often.  Set the Trifield to the 0-100 magnetic setting and take it near your metal water pipe right where it comes into the house.  Does the needle go up as you get close to the pipe?  Does it go way up when you put it right by the pipe?  If so, this means - 100% certainty - that there is electrical current on that plumbing pipe.  Should electricity be running on water or gas pipes?  Of course not!

The magnetic fields coming from pipes can go very far distances - effectively putting a magnetic field throughout your whole house.  Is this something you want you and your family to live with?  The answer is clear that you should not.

What should you do if you have this problem?  We call up a plumber and have him remove a small portion (1-2 feet is fine) of the metal pipe right where it comes into the house, or anywhere before it splits off AND before any wires are attached.  Have the plumber remove a little of the metal pipe and put in PEX (a very popular type of plastic pipe).  This is like unplugging a wire - it breaks the connection, interrupts the circuit.  That current that was on the plumbing pipe can no longer travel there, and the magnetic field will be removed 100%.  It works every time.  Be sure to check gas/sewer lines too.

The Trifield ® Meter is a gaussmeter, electric field meter, radio field strength meter in a single until. When measuring electromagnetic fields (EMF’s), the primary concern is usually magnetic fields, which can be tricky to measure. If a less sophisticated 1-axis gaussmeter is used, a reading of zero could result even where the field is strong. A 1-axis meter must be oriented correctly to measure the field (which is a vector). The 3-axis Trifield Meter solves that problem by measuring the true strength of the field regardless of which way it is oriented. Therefore, the Trifield Meter can be scanned rapidly across an area without having to stop at each point to search for the orientation that gives a maximum reading. Another section of the meter detects AC electric fields, which can exist independently of AC magnetic field. The third section detects radio/microwave, such as from a leaky microwave oven. Q: What does the ELECTRIC setting measure for on this meter?

A: The electric setting measures AC Electric Fields from wiring. It measures in V/m. This setting can be useful for electrical matters - finding wires, tracing wires, etc. However, we do NOT use this setting for biological/health purposes. We find that the Trifield meter is NOT sensitive enough to be useful for health reasons on the electric setting. The same goes for RF/microwave setting.

This is why we ONLY recommend using the Trifield Meter for magnetic fields - which it does a fantastic job at measuring (still my personal favorite).
